After adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers will parade one of the most formidable rosters the NBA has seen in recent years. Aside from fans and pundits, a slew of NBA legends and former players have already advertised them as one of the definitive favorites to win the title. To add to that list, Hall of Fame guard Jason Kidd recently stated that they could very well end up being the best team in the East in the upcoming campaign.
In a recent interview with All-STAR Magazine, Kidd acknowledged that the 76ers are one of the frontrunners for the title next season, pointing to their blockbuster splash in LeBron and their improving and electric backcourt tandem composed of All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and incoming sophomore VJ Edgecombe.
LeBron going to Philly automatically puts Philly in the talks of winning a championship. They could be the best team in the East. That’s just him at the age of 42. He still has that power. Philly has a young backcourt that’s very exciting to watch in Maxey and VJ. I think they’re the team that’s the move."
The 76ers got a strong endorsement for their championship bid from Jason Kidd
An NBA champion himself, Kidd definitely knows what it takes to win the championship. He won a title with the Mavericks back in 2011 and also previously led the Nets to a couple of Finals appearances, only losing to Kobe Bryant's Lakers and Tim Duncan's Spurs. Obviously, he has a strong grasp of winning at the highest level against the most elite competition.
Ironically enough, Kidds' lone championship came at the expense of LeBron in his first season with the Heat back in 2011. Hence, he is one former player who has extensive knowledge of James' ability to wreck opposing game plans and lead his team on the biggest stage.
True enough, James heading to Philly tremendously heightens the team's collective ceiling. The 76ers badly needed a proven closer and a playmaker, and even at 41 years of age, those are two areas where LeBron can still be reckoned as an elite force.
Having a young, dynamic backcourt with Maxey and Edgecombe leading the way will also make the 76ers that much more dangerous. While they are the least proven in the team's projected starting five, they have youth and explosiveness on their side that they can take advantage of to catch defenses off guard. Teams will expect Philly to play more in the half-court, but those guards will allow the squad to also play much faster in the open court.
Guard play is obviously an area of expertise for Kidd, so his words should not be taken lightly in that regard. As one of the best backcourt players of all time, his glowing review of the 76ers' backcourt duo hints strongly at their ability to make the team more unpredictable and difficult to deal with.
The 76ers are staring at their best chance to win the championship for the first time in more than four decades. They will be on a blender right from the get go, but as long as they can fully maximize their abundance of talent, clinching the title should be well within their reach as Jason Kidd says.
