The Philadelphia 76ers have had a fiery start to the offseason and have basically already won the summer with the moves they were able to pull off. Their early success, however, has not precluded the new-look front office from going all-in even more, as they are rumored to have registered a strong interest in pursuing LeBron James in the open market.
Obviously, wanting LeBron is not as climactic as it sounds without the luxury of having a real advantage in the bidding war for the superstar. The 76ers do have that kind of edge, though, thanks to Tyrese Maxey. As ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently pointed out, Maxey is another client of Klutch Sports, essentially making him part of James' "extended family," so to speak.
After unexpectedly choosing to hit the open market and mark his departure from the Lakers, James has opened what is basically a free-for-all race. A handful of teams have already bowed out of that trail, but the 76ers are pretty much a very active player on that front. After all, their external allure just got fortified by the addition of Jaylen Brown into the fold.
The 76ers have a hidden edge in the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes
LeBron and his camp have made it pretty clear that money will not be the most moving factor in choosing his next and possibly final landing spot, opening the door for playoff teams with rather expensive rosters to partake in the bidding war to acquire the 22-time All-Star for next season.
The 76ers, now armed with arguably the most talented quartet in the Eastern Conference, should have a decent shot at signing James. They were part of the inner loop of contenders to snag him back in 2018, so there must at least be some residual interest between both parties on an overdue partnership.
The Maxey and Klutch Sports factor, however, deserves more than scant consideration in this regard. Familiarity breeds strategy as they say, and Rich Paul does have some say when it comes to his clients. It is tenable enough to infer that Philadelphia has become one of the most attractive destinations for LeBron.
Of course, the dots are merely being connected here, but in terms of having the means to satisfy LeBron's hankering for success, the 76ers do have what it takes to lure and bring him in. Add in the Maxey element, and the franchise suddenly has a certain edge none of their contenders truly hold.
