Infectious: a word that defines both Jared McCain's personality and his performances as a rookie. However, after his first year in a Philadelphia 76ers jersey ended abruptly due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, the talented young guard has struggled to rekindle the magic he displayed during an embarrassing campaign for the franchise. Now, the Sixers' hand may be forced to sound out potential trades that include McCain.

Throughout his debut season in the NBA, McCain provided fans with a glimpse of his devastating three-point shooting, ability to distribute the ball, and impressive knowledge of how to create opportunities off the ball for both him and his teammates.

The 21-year-old forced his way into the starting lineup after Philadelphia's injury curse ravaged its way through the roster, and his showings from the bench were frankly too good to ignore. Before his own fitness issues arose, McCain averaged 15.3 points and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 46% from the floor.

Much to the delight of the 76ers faithful, McCain finally returned from his offseason absence; nevertheless, a UCL tear in his right thumb was destined to keep him sidelined for another spell. Despite being cleared with a clean bill of health, McCain has struggled to find the offensive rhythm that helped establish himself as one of the brightest prospects in the NBA.

McCain's misery may end in tears

One thing is for certain: no 76ers supporter wishes to see McCain fail in his bid to etch his name into Philadelphia folklore, but his recent performances are not up to the calibre of a player who can positively contribute to a successful franchise.

Philadelphia fell to a shock 114-106 defeat at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets, in which Tyrese Maxey unusually turned in a poor display by his standards -- something that all elite athletes have fallen victim to at some point during the season. Maxey's inefficient showing was not the worrying aspect of this defeat; the lack of players on the Sixers roster to put points on the board during his time of need was.

Joel Embiid was the exception to the rule as he chalked up 27 points on the night; the same cannot be said about McCain. Although he did snatch nine rebounds, McCain could only muster up 10 points, sinking just three of his 11 field-goal attempts.

This dire shooting form has become a common theme amongst the former Duke guard's appearances, as his shooting average for the season sits at around 35%. The likely reason behind this nosedive in efficiency is the injury he sustained to his hand, mixed with a lower level of self-esteem as a result of his struggles.

For Jared McCain to establish himself as an integral part of the Philadelphia 76ers' game plan is what every supporter of the franchise wishes to see happen. However, general manager Daryl Morey will be aware that, as an asset, the sophomore still holds reasonable value in trade discussions should he wish to acquire a player that he may deem more beneficial to the team for the remainder of the campaign.
