The Philadelphia 76ers have shocked the basketball world by parting ways with one of the most recognizable executives in the NBA. After six years at the helm, Daryl Morey will no longer be continuing as the 76ers' president of basketball operations.

It's a development that's likely to send reverberations throughout the NBA. More importantly, it could mark the beginning of a massive summer of change in Philadelphia.

The 76ers reached the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs by finally defeating the Boston Celtics in a postseason series. Philadelphia also struck draft gold with the selection of VJ Edgecombe in 2025, with the rookie instantly looking the part of a franchise cornerstone.

Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for Morey and the 76ers to continue their relationship, with Shams Charania of ESPN reporting that the sides have agreed to part ways.

"Daryl Morey is out as president of basketball operations with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told ESPN on Tuesday. Morey and 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer met on Tuesday evening in Philadelphia and the decision was made to part ways, sources said."

With the 76ers having made a change at the lead executive position, it's fair to believe more alterations could be made under a new leadership figure.

Morey produced a tenure of mixed results. He helped Philadelphia make five postseason appearances in six years, drafted Edgecombe, parted with Ben Simmons, and ultimately cleared the path for a significant retooling.

Unfortunately, Morey also made several controversial roster decisions along the way that include questionable contracts and premature trades revolving around promising young players.

The most recent example of the latter development saw the 76ers trade Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for no short-term return. McCain was in just his second season, showed clear signs of promise as a rookie, and is now showing out with the Thunder in the playoffs.

Morey also waived Isaiah Joe before he went on to play a key role on the title-winning Thunder and parted with current San Antonio Spurs starter Julian Champagnie to clear a space for Mac McClung so that he could enter the Dunk Contest.

Compounded by the $192.9 million extension Joel Embiid signed while battling injuries, Morey's tenure had its causes for concern. He deserves ample credit for what he did well, but the 76ers appear to be looking for someone who can change their current trajectory.

One can't help but wonder if that means drastic roster changes could be on the way, as well, as the 76ers search for ways to not only move off of big contracts, but build a true contender after being swept out of the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
