The Philadelphia 76ers made some pretty drastic additions this offseason, but their most recent one is probably the move that will have the least hype around it. As reported by Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto, the team has hired Tommy Balcetis as Head of Basketball Intelligence, Analytics and Innovation, bringing with him 12 years of experience as part of the Denver Nuggets organization.
As a behind-the-scenes guy, Balcetis' name will not ring a familiar bell for many. However, given the new position he will be occupying on the 76ers, he could very well function as the replacement for Daryl Morey, at least when it comes to the latter's known expertise. The previous team president did not solely focus on analytics, but he is renowned for his body of work as a strategist using advanced analytics.
The 76ers just hired their new analytics guy to replace Daryl Morey
As everyone knows, the 76ers parted with Morey this summer and brought Mike Gansey to serve as their new president of basketball operations. As such, Balcetis technically is not going to replace Morey, given that he will be slotted in a lower position. The front office probably wanted someone focused on analytics in light of Morey's axing, so this is a good, underrated move for Philly's brass.
Balcetis most recently served as the assistant general manager for the Nuggets and was part of the team's operations team during their title run in 2023. He was actively involved in talent evaluation but mainly focused on basketball strategy and analytics.
Morey is no longer at the helm for the 76ers, but the analytics-driven approached he brought to the franchise is not just going to go away in a flick. It is good that the front office had found a way to pave the way for some continuity in that regard, although Balcetis is not someone from his executive tree. Still, that kind of approach will pay dividends as the team gets closer to mounting its impending championship bid.
Of course, it is way too early to pencil this addition as a brilliant one. Also, the newcomer's impact on the 76ers will not necessarily be felt in the more tangible parts of the game. That being said, given the blitzkrief of talent on this roster, having someone who can help out in strategizing as to lineups that could work and other advanced data that can help decide game management will be crucial to their success, especially in the regular season.
