It sure seems like the LeBron James effect is already felt fully by the Philadelphia 76ers, at least when it comes to becoming a free agent magnet. But having said that, things might have escalated too far with certain players, who are slowly becoming audacious enough to put themselves out there. Case in point? Look no further than Markieff Morris, who is openly eyeing the team's final roster spot with his recent activity on social media.
Morris, who was previously LeBron's teammate when he won a championship with the Lakers in 2020, quoted a tweet that touched base on Kevin Love expressing his interest in joining James and the 76ers. The 14-year vet was apparently not fond of the report, as he advertised himself as someone who should be taking the team's 15th roster spot, which remains unfilled due to cap limitations.

Ex-LeBron teammate Markieff Morris is eyeing the 76ers final roster spot
Morris did not suit up for any team last season, but he is technically not retired yet. He anchors his case to be a part of the roster by doubling down on his Philly roots, but even that is far from enough for the front office to seriously entertain his public audition piece on social media.
The 76ers are bidding for the championship next season, and every move from here on out has to be made deliberately and with utmost intentionality. From a basketball sense, there is a complete dearth of valid reasons for the team's brain trust to have him on their radar. He is no longer someone who can make a difference on the floor, even in spurts.
Heck, Morris himself admitted to that kind of reality on his part. In a separate tweet, he openly stated that he knows he will not actually be playing in games, noting that every team that won a championship had that veteran who was only at the end of the bench. Basically, he would be willing to freeload off the bench in order to experience another possible title run in his home city.
"I’m confused at why y’all keep saying play wit Bron? I’m from Philly! This bigger than that! I know I’m not going to play like that or even at all. Check the tape though every team he won the chip on had an end of the bench vet that didn’t play! It means more than yall think," Morris said via X
Well, that kind of audacity is actually empowering, but it is not the kind that the 76ers should be hyped to witness and act on. The front office will have to do some roster cuts to usher in a 15th player, and the idea of exerting such effort for someone who openly admits to no longer having what it takes to play in the hardwood cannot be any more wasteful.
Morris' attempt at joining the 76ers is reflective of LeBron's influence across the franchise even at this juncture, but it does not mean that the front office should take it seriously. After all, at this point in time, all it does is quench the general public's daily hankering for a comedic bit or two.
