The Philadelphia 76ers offseason has been one largely pegged as a disappointing one. Sure, the front office did not really have much ammo nor leeway to make major changes to the roster, but absolutely no one will be satisfied with the way things have gone for them all summer long.
Aside from their icky decision to let Guerschon Yabusele go amist their lack of depth in the frontcourt and the front office’s bizarre choice to sign both Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon to new, one-year deals, the 76ers will definitely be faulted for still failing to find a resolution to the Quentin Grimes saga. He is technically still a free agent and has been away from the team since camp started.
Grimes’ representation has been steadfast, albeit understandably so, in demanding a much more lucrative payday from the 76ers front office. However, the latter has just been as unrelenting, staying firm with their rather minuscule offer that has contributed largely to this ongoing impasse. At this rate, this could very well spill into the season.
Fortunately, the front office has remained in contact with the 25-year-old’s camp, ever so confident about him returning to the squad sooner than later.
The 76ers seem confident about putting an end to the Quentin Grimes saga sooner than later
During Media Day, Daryl Morey was quizzed about the team’s plans with Grimes, to which he responded that he thinks the situation will eventually be sorted out in the coming days.
If the 76ers remain committed to their initial puny offer to the young guard, Grimes will soon realize that he does not really have a choice bu to take the team’s $8.7 million qualifying offer and stay with the franchise for at least another year before testing free agency waters anew next year. At this point, that is the most probable scenario
Putting a governor on this impasse becomes all the more important in view of the fact that the 76ers badly need Grimes back as soon as possible given that Jared McCain is set to miss time to start the season due to his recent thumb injury.
After his mini breakout last season, Quentin Grimes will be, without a doubt, a huge part of the 76ers rotation in 2025-26. Hence, it is imperative that the front office finally puts a halt to this exhausting standstill and that they follow through on their belief that this would be over in a few days, preferably before the preseason officially opens.
