The decision of LeBron James to sign with the 76ers instantly made the team a magnet for available free agents, but not all of those connections made sense in the grand scheme of things. Case in point? Look no further than the odd rumor that floated the idea of Kevin Love reuniting with the megastar in Philadelphia –– a nugget in the open market that fortunately had the lifespan of a mayfly.
To be fair, it was reported that the former All-Star's agent was in contact with the 76ers about a potential pairing. Obviously, given how dead silent that rumor has turned out to be, one can safely assume that those "talks", if real, did not materialize. Well, this is one omission the team should be glad about simply because the veteran big man does not make a lot of sense as a last-ditch addition to the roster.
The 76ers should be glad that the Kevin Love rumors have died down
The 76ers admittedly could use some more reinforcement in the frontcourt, but only to address the uncertainty surrounding their situation off the bench, specifically behind Joel Embiid. In truth, that could actually be addressed by simply waiting for training camp and seeing which of their armory of backup big men deserves a consistent role.
At this point in his career, Love would only be another voice in the locker room. While that is not a bad thing at all, given how the 76ers witnessed firsthand how an established veteran could help the young guns (see: Kyle Lowry), Philly is actually replete with players touting huge pedigrees. LeBron James alone is a colossal presence in that regard.
There is likewise very little that Love can do to still move the needle for the 76ers, hypothetically, from a basketball standpoint. Aside from his still-impeccable rebounding, his standout skills from the past no longer pop off. His most noticeable decline is in his three-point shooting, as he has drained just 34.7 percent of his threes since the 2022-23 campaign. Meanwhile, his defense –– which was never a strong suit of his –– has only gotten worse with age and declining motor.
While it is fine to appease LeBron and keep him happy by handing him some familiar faces, not all of those reunions make sense aside from sentimental reasons. Kevin Love is a good example of that, as he simply does not make a lot of sense for the 76ers at this juncture.
