With four All-NBA players now set to play next to him instead of just a couple, many are tabbing VJ Edgecombe to take a step back to let his more decorated teammates shine. However, that is not necessarily the case, as the incoming sophomore could very well end up having a prominent role on the team. Heck, even Tyrese Maxey agrees, singling him out as the most vital player on the team this coming season.
As per PHLY Sports' Kyle Neubeck, Maxey went on record recently saying that Edgecombe is now the most important player on the 76ers. The All-NBA guard expounded by pointing out that the sophomore's energy and skill will be crucial, especially since he will be surrounded by high-volume stars. Well, he is most definitely spot-on with that early assessment.
Tyrese Maxey casts the spotlight on VJ Edgecombe's role with the 76ers
Fans and pundits alike are about to catch their first glimpse at what the 76ers' projected starting five will look like together, and Edgecombe finding his own voice will be an interesting storyline to watch out for. Last season, he was good enough to be a high-volume scorer himself next to his decorated teammates, but with the additional infusion of star power the front office brought in, it seems inevitable that his volume will go down.
There is some degree of truth in that, but the key thing is that Edgecombe should get easier opportunities that he can capitalize on. Opposing defenses will undoubtedly prioritize trying to limit his more decorated teammates, and it is up to him to punish them for leaving him with more room to operate.
Offensively, his off-ball utility, connective passing, and three-point shooting will be points of emphasis for him. Fortunately, he has shown more than enough chops this past season, and in his offseason stint with his national team to inspire confidence in his ability to take a big step forward in those departments.
The other part is defense, and that is where the 76ers will rely on him more than the All-Stars on the team. Edgecombe showcased his defensive acuity last season, and the team will need it again in the upcoming campaign. Most likely, he will take on the toughest cover in the opposing team's backcourt.
For those reasons, Maxey is indeed correct in saying that Edgecombe could very well be the most important piece on the 76ers. After all, he will be the one filling the gaps, all while finding his own voice as he likewise aims to accelerate his development.
