The Philadelphia 76ers have one last hurdle to clear this offseason before they fully mobilize to approach the upcoming season — breaking off their poignant silence with Quentin Grimes. The restricted free agent has not yet come to terms with the front office on a new deal, and both sides seem to be going nowhere at this rate.

Previously, the belief was that the 76ers and Grimes’ camp would be able to work things out and iron out a new contract that will please both sides this August. However, the month is coming to its halfway point, yet both parties seem to remain far away from seeing eye to eye on the figure that will do both Grimes and the franchise justice.

Thanks to his rather dry market in free agency, Grimes was not extended with a single offer sheer all summer long. All teams which entered the summer boasting some practical cap space quickly exhausted their wallets. As a result, Philadelphia’s brass wisely allowed the market to play out and determine how they will go about things, hence this standstill.

Having said that, the 76ers are not exactly lacking when it comes to options to break out of this dry spell. And thanks to their rival, they might just have a great idea to finally resolve things with the 25-year-old.

76ers get a timely clue on how to resolve their Quentin Grimes problem thanks to the Nets

According to Jake Fischer, the Nets are “not motivated” to hand Cam Thomas, their restricted free agent, a long-term deal. Alas, electric scorer himself is believed to have gotten increasingly interested in the idea of taking Brooklyn’s qualifying offer for next season in hopes of cashing out as an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Now, Grimes’ situation is a tad different, but it is of the same ilk as Thomas’. Should his camp remain cold to the idea of a longer deal, albeit with a smaller figure than what they had in mind, the young wing could resort to signing a short-term deal to return to the 76ers that would allow him to hit free agency either next year or in 2027.

Of course, that would be detrimental for the 76ers as that would also impact his value as a trade chip, which seems to be his fate with the franchise, but this will also allow them to maximize their chances in the short-term, which is their biggest priority at the moment.

The Philadelphia 76ers saw a lot of great things from Quentin Grimes last season, but given where their future is headed, it would be unwise to go all-in on the ebbs and flows of his situational breakout stint. It’s time for the front office to show that for once, they can be the ones finessing the opposite side.
