Ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers already have a lot of believers that they can win the championship, especially with LeBron James joining the squad. However, as usual, there are also some pretty big skeptics who are not too enthused about The King in Philly. Case in point? Look no further than Charles Barkley, who basically sent a strong warning to the team by demolishing the notion that the megastar is beating Father Time.
In a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Barkley admitted that while LeBron is still putting up good numbers, he does not agree with the notion that the superstar is defeating Father Time. The Hall of Famer specifically pointed to the fact that James' Lakers squads have been swept out of the playoffs for two straight years already, which is apparently a controlling factor in sustaining his rather unpopular opinion.

Well, to first lay the factual grounds, Barkley is mistaken on numerous points. First, the 76ers are definitely not the Lakers. Despite the absence of empirical data, given that the season has not even started yet, Philly will clearly have a different dynamic compared to what LA had with the superstar. The 76ers have more stars around him, and James' on-court responsibility should be much more streamlined and well-defined.
Second, the 76ers legend's truth bomb is not accurate to a tee. The Lakers definitely got booted out in ugly fashion last year, but it was technically a 4-1 defeat and not a clean sweep. This year, they got swept by the Thunder in the second round, but not before pulling off a 4-2 upset over the Rockets in the first round without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Third, LeBron had just proven a few months ago that he can still carry a team. Houston was no joke of a team, yet even without the Lakers' first and second options, James was still able to put up strong numbers of his own while making his teammates look better.
Be that as it may, the 76ers ought to be wary of the fact that LeBron's squads eventually got eliminated in emasculating fashion over the last couple of years. James is probably still the ultimate floor and ceiling-raiser in the NBA, especially during the postseason. However, at this point in his career, he should no longer serve that function. That is no longer viable.
If there is one franchise that is overly familiar with disappointing playoff exits, it is the 76ers. In fact, they also got swept out of the second round this past season. That creates some parallels between them and LeBron's former squad, so at the very least, the team should have a general idea of what it takes not to get humbled in April and onwards.
Charles Barkley's unpopular take might not be perfectly correct, but it definitely sends a message the 76ers should not fully ignore. LeBron has had a lot of disappointments in the playoffs in recent years, especially over the last two seasons, and Philly should use that as a guide to know how the game should be managed with him as one of the co-pilots.
