Dennis Schroder would be 76ers' answer to looming Tyrese Maxey concern

Maxey can't sustain such a high volume of minutes.

While the future of the Philadelphia 76ers may rest in the lap of Tyrese Maxey, his current usage level is unsustainable. After a full season of limited rest, the Sixers have an obligation to find capable backcourt depth to allow Maxey more time on the bench to avoid injury issues. According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, the Cleveland Cavaliers are willing to place Dennis Schroder in the shop window -- an opportunity Mike Gansey should be taking full advantage of.

Dennis Schroder would bring experience and ability to the 76ers

Trade season holds no prisoners, and after a disappointing playoff run for the Cavaliers, they will be looking to fine-tune their talented roster in order to make a championship tilt. It is going to cost to make that level of change, which appears to put Schroder's place in Cleveland in doubt.

Per Brian Windhorst, "The most recent thing I've heard with the Cavs is they're looking to shave off some salary. I think primarily they may be investigating if they could move Dennis Schroder."

While Windhorst's wording suggests nothing is yet concrete in Cleveland, a player of this calibre and experience should instantly whet the appetites of the 76ers' front office. Schroder ticks a lot of offseason boxes for Philadelphia.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, the 32-year-old averaged 10.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, while shooting 40.5% from the floor. Most notably, his production mainly came from a secondary role in the rotation -- starting just three of his 30 appearances.

One concern the Sixers may raise is whether Schroder's numbers warrant a two-year, $30,323,600 contract. Additionally, what assets does the franchise have that would make this trade realistic? Cap flexibility would not be too much of an issue if the franchise makes the decision not to pursue Quentin Grimes in free agency.

Tradeable assets are a current concern for the 76ers. Nevertheless, Philadelphia does have a considerable amount of second-round picks available from the 2027 offseason onward. Not only that, but with the Cavaliers now lacking center depth due to the expiring contracts of Thomas Bryant, Larry Nance Jr., and Dean Wade, Philadelphia could tempt Cleveland with the potential upside of Adem Bona- which, in itself, is very hypothetical.

The 76ers must get Tyrese Maxey some competent help

There is no denying that Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe created one of the most devastating backcourt partnerships in the entire NBA. It was exciting and energetic. When they hit their stride, few teams could contain them. But behind them, Philadelphia did not have the depth in the roster to carry the momentum through the minutes in which one or both of the duo sat on the bench.

Out of the two players, it was Maxey who carried the heaviest burden, not only in responsibility but also in actual minutes on the floor. The 25-year-old averaged an exhausting 38 minutes per game during the regular season (highest in the NBA) and around 39 minutes per game in the postseason.

Of course, star players play star minutes, and given Maxey averaged a career-high in points (28.3), assists (6.6), and steals (1.9), Nick Nurse felt his team's momentum slip when he was not on the court. However, minutes of this nature are counterproductive and unsustainable. No athlete can consistently keep up this workload without falling victim to injury or a dip in form.

Trading for Dennis Schroder would require some smart front office work, but it is possible. Mike Gansey can't allow Tyrese Maxey to continue to record such a taxing volume of minutes, and Schroder's acquisition would provide the Philadelphia 76ers with an experienced option who knows how to make a meaningful impact from a secondary role.
