There is no denying that Justin Edwards is now scrambling for a role on the Philadelphia 76ers' star-studded roster. The acquisitions of LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Dean Wade should decimate the 22-year-old's minutes. However, Edwards' willingness to show up in the Sixers' darkest hours in recent seasons should put some essential credit in the bank with head coach Nick Nurse.
Philadelphia's depth could be Edwards' undoing
Mike Gansey has pulled a rabbit out of a hat during his short time at the helm of the 76ers. If you told any Sixers fans 12 months ago that they would be watching LeBron James and Jaylen Brown suit up in Philadelphia for the 2026-27 season, the social media abuse would have been catastrophic. Trust me, I have been there.
While this is the most exciting time in the 76ers' recent history, it has created a high-pressure environment where Nick Nurse can't afford to fail. With that in mind, several players on the outskirts of the roster will be given few chances to make mistakes, especially frontcourt options.
Unfortunately for Justin Edwards, he is at the forefront of this category. LeBron and Brown are nailed on as starters this season, given their outrageous talents and championship credentials. To make matters worse, Caldwell-Pope and Dean Wade have proven the positive contribution they can make when their number is called from a team's secondary unit -- an area the 76ers have struggled with in recent times.
Even with a stubborn mentality and a set of scintillating performances, the sun appears to be setting on Edwards' time in the City of Philadelphia. But should this be the case?
Edwards should be rewarded for weathering the storm
Everybody loves an underdog, and that is exactly what Edwards has been throughout his basketball career. Despite going undrafted, the Kentucky alum's plucky personality landed him a role on the 76ers' roster, and his rookie year was more than impressive as Philadelphia fell to the depths of the NBA standings. Edwards averaged 10.1 points per game while shooting 36.3% from deep.
Despite stepping up when Nick Nurse had few players available for selection, Edwards saw his role significantly diminished during his second NBA season. His minutes per game dropped from 26.3 to just 15.3. Again, Edwards didn't complain and kept fighting for his place in the rotation.
In March, Edwards was presented with an opportunity to feature more heavily due to Paul George's 25-game suspension for breaching the NBA's Anti-Drug policy. Edwards recorded five consecutive games with 10+ points and scored a season-high 32 points on 7-for-11 shooting from deep in the Sixers' 139-118 victory over the Sacramento Kings on March 20.
Time and time again, Edwards has refused to quit on his 76ers career, and for that, he deserves an opportunity alongside Philadelphia's superstars. His ability to drain shots from outside the arc, while also contributing defensively, could be a huge asset, especially when LeBron and co. inevitably have their minutes staggered.
From afar, Justin Edwards' time in Philadelphia looks over. However, nobody should ever count out a player who has already defied the odds on countless occasions at such a young age. Nick Nurse could find a role for him yet.
