Knicks' NBA Finals dominance should force 76ers to alter offseason priorities

Philadelphia should aim to build upon its young core this offseason.

Watching the New York Knicks steamroll their way to an NBA championship is a Philadelphia 76ers fan's worst nightmare; however, this is currently a reality. While nobody wants to observe their arch-nemeses bathe in success, this can be a reflective moment for the Sixers. The Knicks are going nowhere with their talented roster, and teams like the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons are not far behind them. The 76ers must prioritise youth over chasing an unrealistic championship ring.

The 76ers are not an Eastern Conference superpower

Glazing the New York Knicks is not something that I came here to do, but what they are currently doing is nothing short of spectacular. A nail-biting 105-104 victory on the road over the San Antonio Spurs confirmed New York's 13th consecutive playoff victory -- the second-largest run in NBA history. Let us face the facts: this franchise will be competing at the top of the Eastern Conference for the foreseeable future.

Despite being perceived as the weaker conference, the East still boasts several championship contenders. The Celtics, Pistons, and Cavaliers will all be back in contention during the 2026-27 season, and the Indiana Pacers will be hoping to add their names to the mix with the return of Tyrese Haliburton.

What does this mean for the 76ers? Frankly, even with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George on the roster, they are not a team that is ready for anything more than a brief fling with the postseason. Philadelphia can continue to appease fans with the appearance of ambition, but the front office needs more foresight under the guidance of Mike Gansey.

Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe are an excellent jumping-off point

Choosing the future over the present would be a bold move from the Sixers' hierarchy. Essentially accepting defeat for two or three years will not be well-received by the entire fanbase, especially one with the expectations of the 76ers.

For this vision to work, the Sixers must embrace change. The franchise cannot dance around difficult decisions; they must be willing to shop its most valuable assets in an attempt to acquire significant draft capital that will allow them to select young stars who can change the team's destiny.

Fortunately for the 76ers, this process does not have to be open-heart surgery, as their roster contains talented players with bags of potential. Most notably, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe -- a duo that has established one of the most exciting backcourt partnerships in the entire NBA.

However, as Philadelphia experienced under Daryl Morey's reign, superstars do not win championships. This squad requires versatile depth added to its ranks and, most importantly, the players that the team does sign must be less susceptible to injury. Consistency is key, and the 76ers have not had that for several years.

The Philadelphia 76ers may not want to accept it, but chasing a championship is not realistic under the team's current identity -- and the New York Knicks' NBA Finals dominance has only cemented that fact. Other Eastern Conference franchises are in a much stronger position to compete with the Knicks in the future; this should be the signal that the Sixers need to hit the reset button and build a roster for the future.
