Without Jaylen Brown on the court, the Philadelphia 76ers had to change their starting lineup once again against the New York Knicks for their first set of NBA Cup action. It goes without saying that expectations for names like LeBron James heighten when another star is out for the night.

It's safe to say that the seasoned superstar was more than up for the challenge against the NBA Champions in what became the game with the most weight so far this season.

Saving the best for the most important

Say what you want about the NBA Cup, but it's a regular-season game with more meaning no matter what you believe. Since the Sixers haven't had a taste of championship action in decades, the fan base should certainly welcome the thought of winning a trophy soon, even if it's not the Larry O'Brien right now.

James, a former Cup winner, is clearly trying to help deliver something to the city--giving them a little taste of what they desire for next summer. Friday's action against the Knicks featured James' highest-scoring game as a Sixer, with some of those points coming in clutch time. The Sixers managed to take down the Knicks with a 98-93 victory.

LeBron checked in for 34 minutes. He was second in shots taken, going 8-for-15 from the field, and drilling two of his six shots from deep. After tacking on two free throws, LeBron totaled for a season-high 20 points. He was third in scoring behind Tyrese Maxey's 27 points, and Anfernee Simons' 21 points.

In addition to his scoring, James nearly notched a triple-double. He helped with the team's rebounding issues by leading the way with nine boards. He also continued to dime the defense, producing eight assists while turning the ball over just two times.

Following the game, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse stated the obvious about his 41-year-old forward. The head coach noted that while LeBron has been good in a Sixers uniform throughout the first stretch of games in 2026-2027, he strongly believes that the second battle against the Knicks was "for sure" his best showing. Just a clear example of a needle-mover making a difference when the game holds more weight.

In his four performances leading up to Friday's NBA Cup action, LeBron has been shooting 42.6% from the field, averaging 15.5 points, along with 6.8 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals. With that win, the Sixers advance to 5-1 on the season and start their tournament run with a 1-0 record.
