The Philadelphia 76ers were rattled when Rich Paul said LeBron James is not going to be ring-chasing regarding his free agency decision. After all, the team only had its championship bid to hinge on as its main recruitment pitch to the superstar, and having that taken away for the most part would only work against them.

Well, that is no longer the case. As ESPN's Shams Charania reported, the 22-time All-Star has made it clear that he wants to go to a team where he can compete for a championship. That effectively puts the 76ers back in the running, making the King's ultimate decision that much more interesting.

There has been an influx of news reports as of late with regard to LeBron's decision timeline. As such, it is probably safe to say that the day of reckoning is almost upon us. For now, the 76ers remain an option for his next and likely final landing spot to close the curtain on his illustrious career.

The 76ers just received a welcoming LeBron James update

Philadelphia remains widely believed to be one of the three finalists left in the running for James alongside Cleveland and Miami. Most betting odds have the Cavaliers as the leading candidate, but at this point, given how tight the race has become, it is virtually anybody's game.

Having said that, the 76ers are operating under some functional deficit in the bidding war. Unlike the Cavaliers and the Heat, which were James' former ball clubs, Philly would be a new spot. As such, the franchise can only offer him actual basketball reasons to bring him into the fold, whereas the other two can bolster their respective bids by tapping into the sentimental narratives and the "unfinished business" trope.

The 76ers could beef up championship roster with LeBron addition

Philadelphia will be an even bigger force in the league next season after acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Celtics. But more importantly, LeBron actually fits the team to a T with his much-needed playmaking and size at the position. From a basketball standpoint, the 76ers make too much sense for him as a landing spot if he wants to win.

Ultimately, LeBron James is in full control of his fate. But given this brief yet telling update, suffice it to say that the Philadelphia 76ers still have a good chance to actualize their offseason dream of signing the superstar and getting closer to snapping their title drought even before the next campaign begins.
