While the Philadelphia 76ers have made a lot of awe-inspiring moves in free agency, a notable name they haven’t signed to a new pact is veteran point guard Kyle Lowry, who spent the latter portion of last season with the team off the waiver wire. He was solid for the most part, and thus, was expected to be a shoo-in to re-up with the franchise this offseason.
Lowry may just be a shell of his former self, but he still profiles as a legitimate rotation-worthy point guard who offers championship experience, a boatload of playoff pedigree, three-point shooting, and reliable table-setting, especially off the bench. With the 76ers still lacking depth in the backcourt, the front office should exhaust all options to ensure that his reunion with Nick Nurse persists through next season.
Desperate team rumored to steal Kyle Lowry from the 76ers
According to Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports, the Phoenix Suns are still engaged in talks to bring in the six-time All-Star to their star-studded, yet financially constrained team.
As noted, the Suns have already signed Monte Morris to potentially man the second-unit offense, but Lowry would still be a safer option for them. Phoenix, despite having an uber-talented Big Three leading them, was doomed by their utter lack of playmakers last season which culminated in an embarrassing first-round sweep at the hands of Minnesota.
Philadelphia, still without a resolute backup to Tyrese Maxey, would greatly benefit from having Lowry back. The 76ers were a pretty unstable bunch in the half-court sans Embiid, and the veteran playmaker was one of their stabilizing forces amid an anticlimactic first-round exit.
It remains to be seen whether or not Lowry would be willing to settle for a much punier paycheck this time around, but the 76ers do offer him a shot at another championship with their new nucleus bolstered by Paul George. Hopefully, he comes back to Philly and helps steer the wheel off the bench.
