76ers plans to add third star get significantly more complicated with latest rumor
By Tyler Watts
The Philadelphia 76ers have a mountain of cap space this offseason and the desire to build a contending roster. Joel Embiid is their only player with a guaranteed contract for next season, and the Sixers create an elite squad around the former MVP and his co-star Tyrese Maxey. The plan will involve bringing back some of their free agents and adding more talent to their roster.
Spending significantly in free agency can backfire, and the Sixers cannot afford a mishap. Daryl Morey must get things right or Joel Embiid could be the star demanding a trade.
Shams Charania broke the news on Thursday afternoon that Philadelphia does not plan to target Paul George in free agency. They still want to be aggressive in upgrading their roster, but their focus has shifted to the trade market.
76ers are not finding a third star in free agency
Paul George was the franchise’s lone option in free agency. LeBron James expects to be back in LA. James Harden is not returning to Philadelphia after his messy exit. There are zero other star options available in free agency.
The 76ers could add talent. There are several role players who would impact winning in Philadelphia, but none of them can be classified as stars. The franchise’s best bets in free agency would be OG Anunoby, Klay Thompson, and DeMar DeRozan at this stage.
76ers have other avenues to explore
The offseason should not be considered a disaster yet. They have multiple first-round draft picks to offer in trades and have the space to absorb unwanted contracts. It will be desirable if marquee talents hit the open market. The Sixers’ package would be based solely around draft capital and salary relief, but that is not the worst offer with so many teams searching for room.
Daryl Morey is known for his ability to make trades. He pulled off several blockbusters during his time in Houston and has done a few more in Philly. Expect Morey to be aggressive in adding talent, and do not rule out a massive move before the draft on June 26.
They need a star option to become available. It does not seem likely at this stage, but fans know anything can happen in the NBA.
The Philadelphia 76ers are out on Paul George, but could still want a marquee addition this offseason. It won’t happen in free agency. The trade market will be their focus, so keep your eyes peeled for a Woj bomb or a Shams alert.
