At this point, no one knows when LeBron James will announce his much-awaited decision on where he is taking his talents next season, but the Philadelphia 76ers are widely believed to be in contention to land the star. However, his agent Rich Paul does not seem too enthused about the prospect of him heading to the franchise –– at least, that is what can be gleaned from his most recent comments.
In the latest episode of the Game Over podcast, which Paul co-hosts with Max Kellerman, the Klutch Sports head said that he told James that he cannot judge teams by their roster on paper. If anything, even without naming the 76ers, that is basically an indirect knock on the team. Among the reported finalists for LeBron, Philly is the one that keeps being floated around as a possible James destination because of their newly retooled core, which is now arguably the most formidable one in the East.
"My advice has been don’t just value the paper because the paper in July is different than when you get into training camp, when you get into January."
Rich Paul might have just taken a subtle jab at the 76ers
The Cavaliers and the Heat are the other rumored finalists for James, and while both squads parade strong teams on paper like the 76ers, their recruitment pitch is not entirely centered on title contention. Being former teams of LeBron, that thick air of familiarity is the major, if not outright controlling, part of their bid. Meanwhile, Philly is banking on the promise of definitive championship contention even before they play a single minute as a revamped collective.
After landing Jaylen Brown this offseason, the 76ers will enter the 2026-27 campaign with the most talented foursome in the league on paper. Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and VJ Edgecombe constitute a pretty fearsome starting unit –– one that could still be improved greatly with the hypothetical addition of James, who would instantly solve their playmaking and lack of size woes.

It sure seems like LeBron's camp is not going to focus merely on the talent assessment of the current bidders. Paul's message sounds like a loaded and targeted one, and given that the list of plausible destinations for the King is quite short, the 76ers were definitely the team that caught the biggest stray.
Ultimately, LeBron's decision will be his alone. However, Rich Paul and his camp play a big part in this climactic pondering, so their sentiments –– one that could easily be perceived as critical of the 76ers –– could end up mattering more to the superstar given his circle's proximity.
