The Minnesota Timberwolves made a handful of moves heading into the weekend. They added a former Philadelphia 76ers forward to the roster, giving KJ Martin a second chance in the league.
No longer with the 76ers, Philadelphia's front office won't be worried about rooting for Martin's comeback story to have a happy ending. Instead, they should be keeping an eye on the veteran big man Drew Timme, who is now competing for one of the Timberwolves' final roster spots, according to Michael Scotto.
All eyes on centers across the league
The Sixers are hosting a battle for the backup five spot behind Joel Embiid this Fall. After letting Andre Drummond walk to the New York Knicks and trading Johni Broome to the Los Angeles Clippers, the 76ers are going to watch Adem Bona and the first-year Sixer Ariel Hukporti battle it out, knowing that those two will make the roster.
But the battle of bigs isn't exclusive to those with a guarantee. Tacko Fall will be in the building on a non-guaranteed camp deal as well. The Sixers have some in-house options for their third and final two-way slot, which should be a big man for additional depth, but that doesn't mean Fall will get the spot. The Sixers will be scouting the league during the preseason, and Timme isn't a player they should overlook.
The 26-year-old center has been in the NBA since 2024. After he starred at Gonzaga from 2019 to 2023, he went undrafted. Timme worked his way through the NBA G League pipeline, playing with the Wisconsin Herd, Stockton Kings, and the Long Island Nets. In 2025, he appeared in nine games with the Brooklyn Nets.
In the following year, Timme inked a deal to join the South Bay Lakers before earning a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. He saw the court for 27 games last season, averaging 8.7 minutes of action. Timme produced averages of 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds. He went 57.6% from the field and 44.0% from three.
While LeBron James is unlikely to pound the table for a specific two-way player he wants, it's worth noting the connection. James is quite familiar with Timme's game, and he was very complimentary of the center in the past.
Currently, the Timberwolves have three players on the roster listed as centers outside of Timme. Rudy Gobert is the sure starter, with Joan Beringer being the only other big with a guaranteed salary. Rocco Zikarsky is taking up one of the three two-way slots.
Timme has a tough battle to crack the Timberwolves' roster, but he'll get a chance to showcase what he's got in a different setting outside of Los Angeles. The 76ers should be paying close attention.
