The Philadelphia 76ers are caught up in all the ruckus surrounding free agency, but VJ Edgecombe appears to be determined to save the team in an unforeseen way.
While all eyes are on how all teams are maneuvering in the open market, which has taken on a rampant velocity since free agency kicked off, there is one more big event coming up in just a few days — Summer League. Teams are now polishing up their deck for the looming showcase, with the 76ers having already finalized their roster.
Edgecombe, Johni Broome, and Hunter Sallis — the three prospects which the 76ers drafted or picked up from the undrafted players’ market — are all set to show fans their first glimpse into what they can provide for the team right from the get-go.
Now, it seems like Edgecombe, the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, is out to suprise a lot of people with his incoming role.
VJ Edgecombe surprises 76ers fans with huge switch-up before Summer League
Edgecombe was asked about his mindset heading into his first foray into the NBA with the Summer League, courtesy of The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, and his answer is definitely a riveting one. The rookie bared that he is eyeing “being more of a point guard” during the offseason tourney in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
The 76ers do not have a natural playmaker on the roster, and while Edgecombe certainly does not profile as one, being more of a natural shooting guard than anything else, him taking on the hat of a floor general to kickstart his NBA career should do wonders for his rookie campaign.
Even better, this would bolster the team’s offensive dynamic next season. With Philadelphia already boasting a litany of talented shot creators, someone will have to be comfortable handling the rock to set the table for others. If Edgecombe can do that on the secondary, that would be huge for both him and the team.
The 76ers finished a meager 29th in assists per game last season, and while that is not a sole indicator for team success, it speaks of the team’s heavy reliance on individual creation and one-on-one situation.
Hence, VJ Edgecombe willingly taking on the mantle as the floor general for the time being is good news for the Philadelphia 76ers, regardless of what other moves they pull off in free agency.
