Oh Canada

Bryan Colangelo has been living in Toronto Canada with a beautiful wife Barbara Bottini and two children, son Mattia and daughter Sophia.  That’s an important feature.  Why?  Because Bryan is working through the tedious legal process of naturalization – becoming a Canadian citizen.   The rules for becoming a Canadian citizen are similar to the process of any country, and are provided by Settlement.org .  The rules require:

Be over 18 years of age
Provide proof that you know how to speak and write in 1 of Canada’s official languages (either English or French)
Be a Permanent Resident (PR)
Declare that you plan to live in Canada after you become a citizen
Have lived in Canada as a PR for at least 4 years out of the 6 years (1,460 days) before you apply
Be physically present in Canada for at least 183 days of each year during the 4-year period
Have filed your taxes for at least 4 years during the last 6 years and any income tax you may owe must be paid
Apply for citizenship from within Canada

I’ve taken some of the guess work of the rules out for you.  The two hugely imposing obstacles is the living in Canada after citizenry granted and living in Canada 183 days (over 50% of the year) during the four year period.  While taking a role with the Philadelphia 76ers cannot work under those two regulations, it would simply delay the plans to retire.   Long distance works in some professions, but the day to day work involved in coordinating, identifying, and resolving issues for a professional basketball team needs lots of hours and face to face time.

If his father called him up and asked him to take over the Philadelphia 76ers, there is little doubt that Bryan would respond to his father’s request.   And in the face of the news on April 6, 2016, that call is likely to have already been made, or soon will be.
