4. What’s next for Highsmith?
Haywood Highsmith was a nice story last season. Coming from a junior college and earning a two-way contract, some thought he might stick — a 3-and-D wing who, at the time, was among the top G-League sharpshooters.
After signing onto the Sixers, however, Haywood’s production plummeted and he never made an impact at the NBA level. He was cut this summer, opening up a spot for Pelle. Now he’s on the Summer League roster without a clear future.
Highsmith has a chance to start, depending on where Connor Johnson takes the starting five. Assuming Thybulle and Smith start on the wings, it’s reasonable to project Highsmith as a small-ball four. He has the size and length to handle those responsibilities.
A strong Summer League would clear the way for a second NBA chance. Highsmith has the tools. He’s a strong 6-foot-7 wing, has a 7-foot wingspan, and still has projectable 3-point mechanics. He has more than enough to intrigue an NBA team, even if it’s not in Philadelphia.
If nothing else, there’s a chance Highsmith returns as an important member of the Delaware Blue Coats next season.
