3 goals for Sixers forward Tobias Harris: 50/40/90

Harris was painfully close to joining the exclusive 50/40/90 club last season, slashing .512/.394/.892 en route to 19.5 points per game. That’s absurd efficiency, which is easily Harris’ biggest selling point. He doesn’t miss a lot of makable shots.

There’s nothing profoundly different between 39.4 percent from deep and 40 percent from deep, especially if the volume doesn’t really change. That said, it would be just plain cool for Harris to join such a prestigious group of all-time offensive talents. Not many players can crack 50/40/90, especially with Harris’ offensive workload. Kyrie Irving did last season. Harris seems like a clear candidate to join him in 2022.

Broadly speaking, Harris should aim to keep his efficiency up while improving as a passer and ratcheting up his volume from deep. Harris is a legitimately great 3-point shooter on paper, but he too often hesitates and opts for a drive or a dribble pull-up, rather than a lightly contested 3. Last season, Harris averaged 3.4 attempts per game from deep, a steep decline from the season prior (5.0). If his elite efficiency comes at the cost of volume, it’s probably not helping the Sixers.

Harris’ career high in attempts per game (5.3 in 2017-18) coincided with a 41.1 percent success rate. It’s clear he can shoot more without sacrificing his percentage. Harris’ real goal should be to set a new career high in volume (let’s say 6.0 attempts per game) while still clearing the 40 percent mark.
